For over a decade I was the editor of Ultimatum. Ultimatum is an annual magazine which was sent to people who play Ultimate frisbee in the UK.
I took this on as an extracurricular activity. We had a shoestring budget (£7,000) that I spent entirely on getting a high quality product with nothing left for staff. But that didn’t matter as the publication quickly became a prized object that people were only too happy to contribute to. Ultimate has a great pool of creative talent, and I was able to commission interesting articles and convince semi-professional photographers to donate their work. There’s something deeply gratifying in seeing your photos in print.
My design was based around quality images with space to breath, rather than trying to cram too much in. The concept was about creating a family album for the whole community. Every once in a while it comes up in conversation, and it’s lovely to hear the affection that people remember the publication with.
